The Shaw Brick industrial site in Lantz underwent a site-wide fuel switch from oil and propane to natural gas.  Since natural gas was not available by pipeline at the site, compressed natural gas (CNG) would have to be trucked from a “mother station” (compressing station) built on the natural gas pipeline near the Halifax Airport to a “daughter station” (decompressing station) at the plant in Lantz.  The CNG "daughter station" at the Shaw Brick site was the first station of its kind built in Nova Scotia.  Over one hundred pieces of equipment ranging from brick kiln burners, to steam boilers, to radiant tube heaters were converted or replaced and connected to natural gas piping that was installed throughout the site. 

M&R Engineering provided project management as the prime consultant and also provided mechanical and electrical design for the project. 

Key Facts: 

  • First compressed natural gas "daughter station" constructed in Nova Scotia.
  • Equipment converted or replaced for use with natural gas in Brick Plant, Block Plant, Maintenance Shop, Hess Plant, Press Plant, Dry Cast Plant, and Wet Cast Plant.
  • CSA field certification completed for specific process equipment that was converted to run on natural gas.
  • Project completed with full involvement and cooperation with the Nova Scotia Department of Labor Fuel Safety inspectors during both the design and construction phases of the project.
  • Plants were individually metered to monitor their individual gas consumption.
  • Where applicable, existing propane piping was cleaned and pressure tested to be reused for natural gas, saving the client for the cost of installing hundreds of feet of new piping throughout the site.
